Pinned by the bar!
« on: November 08, 2007, 22:54 »
Ermm.... hehe i think this should not be a new experience for you folks. But i need to ask this, just for kicks... what happened when you fail on the bench and get pinned under by a bar without a spotter, in a lonely quiet gym without anyone to help. what do you do?  ;D
Where can I paddle? I just got out of Vault 13!

if you're doing Bench Press, without a spotter, make sure the weights are not fixed with a stopper.

So in case of total failure of reps, just hold the bar at you chest, twist to 1 side so the weights will drop out, then try to control the motion as it swings violently to e other side, and the weights will fall out too.

U need not be concerned with the weights hitting the ground loudly, as there wouldn't be anyone else around. (if not, they should have come to your rescue, unless u're a really replusive person)

what if you are at home?? if a 20 kg plate comes rolling off and crack the tiles... i will be in for serious trouble LOL  :D ;D

then again don't keep pushing to failure vault boy, if you have to find a spotter dude. Getting pinned is one thing, getting crushed is another.

I get pinned often as i was starting out with weights, because back then i subscribe to the concept of always training to failure. Which I realise subsequently to be used as a training tool, not as a constantly used training programme.

Refer to my sticky on neural effects.

So now I will let go of that dubious last rep, especially if I am alone. Otherwise, get a friend with you if you are going heavy and going to failure. Getting pinned is at best, a humiliating experience, with people thinking you are a noob who overestimated your own abilities, and at worst dangerous. Getting pinned on the bench is relatively ok, imagine getting pinned doing squats without proper squat racks facilities.
It is all just in the mind.

That's either plain stupidity or too much steroids.
