As a canoeist, how should we take our protein supplement?

That will depend on hard you train I think. For me, I will mix a shake and drink it down within 1-2 hrs of training.

But if you don't train that hard (as in almost everyday), I think eating more meat and drinking milk/soya will do.

Thank a lot for the information. I will try it out for one month and see how it goes. If there is an improvement, I think I will carry on with the supplement. :D

over dosing on protein will stress your liver, kidney and waste your money. also not all protein supplements in the market are made alike. you should be wary about content and costs.

not everyone is suited to take protein supplements. Those with lactose intolerance. (i.e drink milk and get diarrhea), are not suited for most protein supplements. If you lactose intolerant, look for a product that has low lactose  or added lactase in the mix to help digest the lactose. Or simply go for non-diary products like soya products and eggs for your protein source.
Where can I paddle? I just got out of Vault 13!

most known NEGATIVE side effects are mostly related to indigestion of lactose, the complex sugar found in all diary products. The human body digests lactose sugar with an enzyme known as lactase, and they are produced in the guts by the friendly bacteria. Some of us just do not produce that much lactase.

As a result, inability to digest lactose causes, inflatulence (loads of gas coming out from your behind   ), soft faeces and even diarrhea if serious. However, there could also be other reasons for these syndromes. It could be that the product itself is of poor quality, or worse, contaminated.

Some protein supplements do not contain what they claim to contain. Some contains alot of sugar or even loads of filler. The more the filler, the less the protein. (Fillers used are usually, ashes, cocoa powder, lecithin, artificial flavour)

Over-dosing on protein is not something that happens immediately. It happens over time.... as you eat more than u should, u realise u have a thinner wallet. But seriously speaking, effects of long-term abuse of whey protein have not been clinically tested. But as with all things, moderation is the way to go.

The only biggest side effects of normal use of whey protein known to date, is more lean muscle mass.

But you must understand that wide spread retail level protein supplementation did not occur until the 80s, and whey came on in a big way only in the 90s. So long term use by humans are not known.

Will protein intake increase body weight? Will heavy body weight affect the performance of a canoeist? (as in, will the boat sink/poor balancing etc..) :?

Hi to anyone experienced in the arena of watersports and protein intakes.
I do have a few pertinent questions to ask.

1.Why is it that typically, dragonboaters have a very lean and well-defined body while at the same time having a muscular(not too bulky) and strong built?I am asking because I am a weightlifter all this while and only largely train for strength like applying the principles of powerlifting(eg.one-rep max and progressive overload) and doing only occasional cardio, and ended up having a bulky overall frame which I am trying to correct and take on the dragonboat leaner and meaner physique upon intro to this sport by some friends.

2.Is dragonboat training considered an endurance and/or strength-based sport?
And is it possible to be strong or get even stronger physically at the same time keep lean and muscular with dragonboat training style?

3.How different is the dragonboat training from canoeing?

4.What should my protein intake per kg of bodyweight be like for dragonboat training?

5.Must I consume more and smaller meals a day to remain lean?Or are there any specific diet plans or consumption patterns that a dragonboater should aim to follow?

Thanks, please pardon my overasking and not consider it too onerous,as I am completely new to this sport and would like to know more.
